Surgery
I have been in the operating theatres a few times, watching with fascination the process of delving in, manipulating, fixing and retreating. It is a humbling experience to see inside someone else's body, a private space rarely seen.

I want to capture the sense of looking inside and examining what is usually hidden. I have taken as an analogy the machines that replicate some of the functions of the human body, dialysis machines that work like kidneys and anaesthetic equipment which partly act like our lungs.

I have taken some of these machine parts and cast them in latex. They are now transformed into organic looking non-functional objects.

I am struck by the enormity of how complex and fragile our bodies are. Transplantation seems to be a poignant reminder of our vulnerability and also huge capacity to adapt to change with resilience and humility.

A recent Residency at the Royal College of Surgeons Museum in Edinburgh was a rich place to gather information for future projects.
