I have several interlinked themes that inspire me, all radiating from my fascination with the inescapable changes that happen in our internal lives and also externally in the natural environment.
Walking, in particular by the sea, is a constant source of inspiration. I am an avid beachcomber and earlier work reflects ideas around found objects as worry beads, collecting man-made relics, and trying to make sense of remnants of information. From this I have recently developed a range of porcelain and silver jewellery.
My current focus is bone forms, often collected on beaches and hill walks. I find they are an amazing mixture of original functional orthopaedic structures overlaid with weathered eroded surfaces. I make associations with large scale rock structures with holes in. They have similar calciferous composition, and I am drawn to the water flow marks, wind eroded edges and lichen coverings. Bones are at once beautiful sculptures and also entirely functional, minimalist pieces of machinery.
I use a variety of materials including plant/organic mixed with porcelain and other clays, which burn out on firing to produce holes, worn surfaces and eroded textures.
I am enjoying the process of designing large forms which are for both indoor and outdoor use. I am passionate about texture, form and playful use of different materials within my pieces.
